Russian rock is the name referred to
Rock music made in
Russia and/or in
Russian.
Rock and roll became known in the
Soviet Union in the 1960s and quickly broke free from its western roots. According to many music critics, its golden age were the 1980-es (especially the era of
perestroika) as the
Soviet underground rock-music scene could release their records officially and break through to the
television and
radio. Russian rock has it's own characteristics and that's why often not every
rock band in
Russia is referred as Russian rock but only those who have some of it's characteristics.
