The Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg (German Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg; also known as simply University of Heidelberg), the oldest in Germany, was established in the town of Heidelberg, then the seat of the Counts Palatine, Prince-Electors of the Holy Roman Empire, in 1386. The university's Latin name is Ruperto Carola Heidelbergensis. It is a member of the Coimbra Group and the LERU.
