Height: 22-27 inches
Weight: 90-130 lbs.
Life Span: 9-11 yrs.
Breed Group: Guardian Dogs
Overview
Rottweilers are robust, courageous, protective, and powerful. With proper and early obedience training and socialization, they are generally calm and confident as well. Proper training is especially important for rottweilers that will be around young children and other animals -- many cannot be trusted around small dogs or cats.
Rough play and aggressive games, such as tug-of-war, should be avoided.
Appearance
The coat is short, straight, coarse, and dense. Coat color is black with rust to mahogany markings above each eye and on the cheeks, muzzle, chest, legs, and feet.
Grooming & Exercise Needs
Rottweilers should be brushed once a week. They need considerable exercise -- long walks and romps daily -- and do best in the suburbs or country.
Origins
This ancient breed was used by Roman cattle drovers to herd cattle to market and then protect the master's profits on the way home. The breed takes its name from "Rottweil," the German town at the "end of the line" for those early cattle drives.
Special Alerts
It is especially important to obtain a rottweiler from a reputable breeder. This breed requires experienced and authoritative owners.
Breed-related health concerns: hip and elbow dysplasia, deafness, parvovirus, neurological disorders, kidney failure, bloat.
