Ross Sea

The Ross Sea is a deep bay of the Southern Ocean in Antarctica between Victoria Land and Marie Byrd Land. It was discovered by James Ross in 1841. In the west of the Ross Sea is Ross Island with the Mt. Erebus volcano, in the east Roosevelt Island. The southern part is covered by the Ross Ice Shelf. Roald Amundsen started his South Pole expedition in 1911 from the Bay of Whales, which was located at the shelf. In the west of the Ross sea, McMurdo Sound is a port which is usually free of ice during the summer. The southernmost part of the Ross Sea is Gould Coast, which is approximately two hundred miles from the Geographic South Pole.

Das Rossmeer (engl.: Ross Sea) ist ein tiefes Randmeer im Südlichen Ozean vor der Antarktis, das zwischen Victorialand und Marie-Byrd-Land liegt. Das Rossmeer ist etwa zur Hälfte permanent von einer festen, dicken und knapp 500.000 km² großen Eisdecke bedeckt - dem Ross-Schelfeis. Es ist benannt nach James Clark Ross, der es 1841 entdeckte. Im Westen des Rossmeers liegt die Ross-Insel mit dem Mount Erebus, einem noch aktiven Vulkan, und der McMurdo-Sund, der einen natürlichen Hafen bildet, der im antarktischen Sommer gewöhnlich frei ist von Eis. Östlich dieses Sunds befindet sich die Franklin-Insel und nordöstlich davon die Coulman-Insel.

Znaczna część morza pokryta przez cały rok lodem pływającym.Na Morzu Rossa znajduje się Lodowiec Szelfowy Rossa, Wyspa Rossa i Wyspa Roosvelta. Przez morze przebiega linia zmiany daty.

Il mare di Ross (in inglese Ross Sea) è una profonda baia situata in Antartide tra Terra della regina Victoria e Terra Marie Byrd. Oltre la metà del mare di Ross è costantemente coperta da una spessa coltre di ghiaccio detta barriera di Ross (Ross Ice Shelf) che ha una supeficie di circa 500.000 km2. Il mare di Ross è così chiamato in onore di James Clark Ross, che lo scoprì nel 1841. A ovest del mare di Ross si trova l'isola di Ross sulla quale si trova il Mount Erebus, un vulcano attivo, mentre in un'insenatura a est si trova la baia di McMurdo che forma un porto naturale libero dai ghiacci nell'estate antartica.
