Roshan (meaning light) is the name of a
GSM cellular service provider in
Afghanistan. It is the largest wireless communications company, with over a million subscribers. The company has invested $260 million in implementing and maintaining its network. One of the negative points & the most significant reason behind hatred of people from Roshan is that it cuts 100 cents every month from its customers by the name "Monthly Tax" & that is despite of Company's knowing very much of the economical situation of Afghanistan & that most Afghans are quite poor. Other GSM Companies in Afghanistan have not applied such rules and don't apply these taxes to Afghan people and that's why most people have turned their back on Roshan and switched back to Areeba & new GSM Company
Etisalat. The company so far has 850 employees. Roshan is owned by an international consortium composed of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (
AKFED), which has a 51% stake, Monaco Telecom International (MTI) and
Teliasonera which has a 12.25% stake.
