Romanization

In linguistics, romanization (or Latinization, also spelled romanisation or Latinisation) is the representation of a word or language with the Roman (Latin) alphabet, or a system for doing so, where the original word or language uses a different writing system (or none). Methods of romanization include transliteration, for representing written text, and transcription, for representing the spoken word. The latter can be subdivided into phonemic transcription, which records the phonemes or units of semantic meaning in speech, and more strict phonetic transcription, which records speech sounds with precision. Each romanization has its own set of rules for pronunciation of the romanized words.

Romanisierung bezeichnet die Übernahme der römischen Sprache und Zivilisation durch andere, meist eroberte Völker. Romanisierung bedeutet im Wesentlichen eine sprachliche und kulturelle Anpassung unter Aufgabe oder Umgestaltung eigener Kulturformen. Die Romanisierung geschah oft durch Veteranen, die eine Einheimische heirateten. Die Ausdehnung des Römischen Imperiums hatte nicht überall eine Romanisierung zur Folge. Im östlichen Mittelmeerraum haben sich die von den Römern vorgefundenen orientalischen oder hellenistischen Kulturformen behauptet; die Dominanz etwa der antiken griechischen Kultur war dafür zu groß. Sie konnten sogar Einfluss auf die römische Kultur nehmen. Romanisiert haben sich die nördlichen und nordwestlichen Regionen Europas, die zur Zeit ihrer Eroberung keine eigene hochentwickelte Schriftkultur besaßen.

Romanisatie of latinisatie is de bewerking waarbij een taal voorzien wordt van het Romeinse of Latijnse alfabet of een Latijnse schrijfwijze.Tot de zeventiende eeuw gebruikten veel wetenschappers gelatiniseerde namen, aangezien Latijn toen de internationale taal was. Zo noemde Willebrord Snel van Royen zich bijvoorbeeld Snellius en werd Kongzi gelatiniseerd tot Confucius.Bij het romaniseren van een taal kan gebruikgemaakt worden van transliteratie, dit is het omzetten van het oorspronkelijke schrift. Bij transliteratie blijft het mogelijk om uit het geromaniseerde schrift te herleiden wat het oorspronkelijk schrift was.
