Roman alphabet

The Latin alphabet, also called the Roman alphabet, is the most widely used alphabetic writing system in the world today. Apart from Latin itself, the alphabet was adapted to the direct descendants of Latin (the Romance languages), Germanic,  Celtic and some Slavic languages from the Middle Ages, and finally to most languages of Europe. With the age of colonialism and Christian proselytism, the alphabet was spread overseas, and applied to Amerindian, Indigenous Australian, Austronesian, Vietnamese, Malay and Indonesian languages. More recently, Western linguists have also tended to prefer the Latin alphabet or the International Phonetic Alphabet (itself largely based on the Latin alphabet) when they transcribe or devise written standards for non-European languages; see for example the African reference alphabet.

L'alphabet latin est l'alphabet qu'on utilise majoritairement pour écrire les langues d'Europe occidentale ainsi que dans certains des pays qui ont été colonisés par les Européens. C'est, en concurrence avec l'alphabet cyrillique et, dans une bien moindre part, l'alphabet grec, l'écriture occidentale par défaut et maintenant – en raison de l'importance économique et culturelle de pays l'utilisant (comme les États-Unis) une écriture internationale : on peut trouver des mots écrits en lettres latines dans les rues du Japon comme dans celles d'Égypte. L'alphabet latin est également le seul utilisé à ce jour pour noter les adresses de sites internet (URL) et de courriel, en attendant une généralisation effective de l'unicode au moins pour les URL.

L'alfabeto latino, detto anche alfabeto romano, è il sistema di scrittura alfabetica più diffuso nel mondo. È l'alfabeto adottato dalla grande maggioranza delle lingue dell'Europa centrale e occidentale, nonché delle aree del mondo colonizzate dagli europei. Durante il XX secolo è stato anche adottato da alcune lingue non europee.Vista l'insufficienza di caratteri per rappresentarne tutti i fonemi, molte lingue hanno poi affiancato a questi caratteri altri caratteri aggiuntivi formati o per aggiunta di segni diacritici (tilde, cediglia, hacek, sopralineature, trattini di taglio, etc.) o per legature (es.: ß) o per importazione da alfabeti precedenti (es.: þ) o ancora considerando convenzionalmente gruppi di caratteri come un'unica entità (es. ll o ch).
