Roman Catholic Church

The Roman Catholic Church or Catholic Church (see terminology below) is the Christian church in full communion with the Bishop of Rome, currently Pope Benedict XVI. It traces its origins to the original Christian community founded by Jesus and spread by the Twelve Apostles, in particular Saint Peter.The Catholic Church is the largest Christian church, representing around half of all Christians, and is the largest organized body of any world religion. According to the Statistical Yearbook of the Church, the Catholic Church's worldwide recorded membership at the end of 2005 was 1,114,966,000, approximately one-sixth of the world's population.

On appelle catholicisme l'ensemble des dogmes, des institutions et des préceptes de l'Église catholique romaine dont la fondation serait la parole de Jésus-Christ à l'apôtre Simon-Pierre : « Tu es Pierre et sur cette pierre, je bâtirai mon Église » et dont l'élaboration repose ensuite sur les différents conciles œcuméniques, notamment pour les plus récents, le concile de Trente (1545-1563), le concile Vatican I  (1870) et le concile Vatican II (1962-1965) qui forment avec l'Enseignement de l'Eglise , l'ensemble la « Tradition ».

Die römisch-katholische Kirche (v. griech. καθολικός, katholikos: allgemein, über alles bzw. alle herabkommend, allgemeingültig) ist die zahlenmäßig größte Konfession innerhalb des Christentums. Sie umfasst 23 Teilkirchen mit eigenem Ritus, darunter die mitgliedermäßig größte lateinische Kirche und die unierten Ostkirchen. Mit den anglikanischen, den altkatholischen und den orthodoxen Kirchen teilt die katholische Kirche die Siebenzahl der Sakramente und das Weiheamt, aufgegliedert in Bischof, Priester und Diakon (Klerus). Unterscheidendes Merkmal ist die Anerkennung des Primats eines Papstes. Der römisch-katholischen Kirche gehören weltweit etwa 1,1 Milliarden Mitglieder an ; in Deutschland sind es rund 26 Millionen.

La Chiesa cattolica è, nell'accezione più comune, la Chiesa cristiana che riconosce il primato di autorità al papa di Roma (per le altre accezioni, si veda il paragrafo La denominazione Chiesa cattolica). La Chiesa cattolica sostiene che in sé stessa sussista la Chiesa universale (questo è infatti il significato etimologico dell'aggettivo "cattolico"), fondata da Gesù Cristo, a cui appartengono tutti i cristiani battezzati, distinguendo fra coloro che sono in piena comunione con la Chiesa cattolica e le altre Chiese che da essa sono separate.

De rooms-katholieke Kerk, meestal kortweg katholieke Kerk (of contextueel de Kerk) genoemd, is de grootste christelijke Kerk ter wereld. Het begrip 'rooms-katholiek' is ontstaan aan het begin van de 16e eeuw, ten tijde van de Reformatie, om in de diverse opsplitsingen van het christendom een duidelijke naam te hebben.
