Robert Fulton (November 14, 1765 –  February 24, 1815) was a U.S. engineer and inventor who is widely credited with developing the first commercially successful steam-powered steamboat, making a practical success of the invention pioneered by others including Claude de Jouffroy in France, John Fitch in the United States and William Symington in Scotland.
