Rijkswacht

The Belgian Gendarmerie was a paramilitary gendarmerie-type police force of Belgium until January 1, 2001, when it was merged with the other police forces into the Local police and Federal police.The Gendarmerie used to be the responsibility of the Minister of Defense, but it lost its military status after January 1, 1992, when a large restructuring of the force was made. It was then put under supervision of the Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Justice, obtaining a civilian status. This restructuring occurred after the 'black' 1980s of the Nijvel gang, Heysel Stadium disaster, Cellules Communistes Combattantes (CCC), and other criminal and terrorist activity, against which the Gendarmerie was deemed ineffective.

Histoire En 1795, les provinces belges sont intégrées à la France. C'est à ce moment qu'y est créé la gendarmerie, premier corps de police unifié et coordonné, sur le modèle français. Ce corps, militaire, avait été créé quelque temps plus tôt dans le reste de la France en remplacement de la Maréchaussée de l'ancien empire. Le texte légal qui organise ce service est une loi du 17 avril 1798 qui restera en vigueur chez nous jusqu'en 1957.

De rijkswacht (Frans: gendarmerie) was tot 1 januari 2001 de landelijke politiedienst van het Koninkrijk België. Op die datum is de rijkswacht, samen met andere politiediensten, opgegaan in een nieuwe structuur, de lokale en federale politie.
