Ríg is the name applied to a Norse god described as "old and wise, mighty and strong" in the Eddic poem Rígthula (Old Norse Rígsþula - Song of Ríg). The prose introduction tells that Ríg is another name for Heimdall, who is moreover called the father of mankind in Völuspá.Rig wandered through the world and brought into being (apparently by fathering them) the progenitors of the three classes of human beings as conceived by the poet. The youngest of these sons inherited the name "Ríg" and in turn his youngest son, Kon the Young or Kon ung (konung meaning 'king' in Old Norse) also inherited the name or title "Ríg". This third Ríg was the first true king and the ultimate founder of the state of royalty as appears in the Rígsthula and in two other works in connection. In all three sources he is connected with two primordial Danish rulers named Dan and Danp.

Dans la mythologie nordique, Ríg est le nom que prit le dieu Heimdall pour se dissimuler, lorsqu'il partit pour Midgard où il créa les trois classes d'humains : Les serfs, Thrall qu'il créa lors de son premier voyage à Midgard;les paysans libres, Karl créés lors du deuxième voyage vers Midgard;le noble guerrier, Jarl créé lors du troisième et dernier voyage de Ríg pour Midgard.

Die Rígsþula (Rigst(h)ula, Ballade oder Lied von Rig), auch Rígsmál, ist ein Eddalied, das den Ursprung der gesellschaftlichen Stände (Knechte, freie Bauern, Edlinge) behandelt. Der ansonsten unbekannte Gott Rig (vermutlich ein irisches Lehnwort für König) kommt dreimal auf die Erde und zeugt nacheinander die Ahnherren der Knechte, freien Bauern und Edelinge.

Heimdall of Heimdallr is in de Noordse mythologie de wachter der goden. Hij is de zoon van negen maagdelijke zusters, mogelijk dochters van de zeegod Aegir. Snorri Sturluson noemt Odin als zijn vader.Heimdall ontstaat uit het schuim van de branding. Uit de neveldamp schept hij een verbindingsboog van Midgard naar Asgard, Bifröst genaamd, bestaande uit damp en licht. Heimdal heeft het absolute horen, hoort het gras en de wol groeien, en blaast op de Gjallarhoorn.Als wachter der goden heeft Heimdall minder slaap nodig dan een vogel. Hij is in staat om zowel 's nachts als overdag honderd mijl ver te zien.

Rígsþula (Rigstula) is in de Edda het Lied van Rig. Het is een relatief jong gedicht (eind 12de eeuw), dat handelt over de schepping der standen. In elk van de drie delen komt de handel en wandel als onderscheiden van die van de andere standen tot uiting. Dit zijn volgens Rig: de knechten (handwerklieden), de boeren (voedselproducenten), en de edelen (bestuurders, beschermers en strijders). Er was geen uitgesproken priesterstand in de Noordse en Germaanse cultuur, aldus Georges Dumézil. Toch waren er de druïden en is er sprake van priesteressen zoals de Volva.
