Richmond, Virginia

Richmond is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the United States. Like all Virginia municipalities incorporated as cities, it is an independent city and not part of any county (Richmond County is unrelated, and located more than 53 miles (85 km) away in the northeast region of the  state). Richmond is the center of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) and the Greater Richmond area. Surrounded by Henrico and Chesterfield Counties, the city is located at the intersections of Interstate 95 and Interstate 64 in central Virginia. As of 2006, the city's estimated population is 192,913, with a metro area population of approximately 1.2 million.

Richmond – miasto w Stanach Zjednoczonych, stolica stanu Wirginia. Miasto ma 198 tys. mieszkańców (2000), aglomeracja miejska ma 1,126 mln mieszkańców (2003). Ma status miasta niezależnego.Pierwsi angielscy osadnicy przybyli w okolice obecnego miasta w 1607. Miasto wytyczone pod obecną nazwą w 1737. Zostało stolicą stanu w 1780.Podczas amerykańskiej wojny secesyjnej było stolicą Skonfederowanych Stanów Ameryki. Jako stolica miasto było głównym celem ofensyw wojsk Unii, jednak zostało zdobyte dopiero w kwietniu 1865, w ostatnich miesiącach wojny. Miasto zostało spalone przez wycofujących się konfederatów.
