Rhythm and blues

Rhythm and blues (also known as R&B or RnB) is a popular music genre combining jazz, gospel, and blues influences, first performed by African American artists. The term was coined as a musical marketing term in the United States in 1947 by Jerry Wexler at Billboard magazine. It replaced the term race music (which originally came from within the black community, but was deemed offensive in the postwar world) and the Billboard category Harlem Hit Parade in June 1949. In 1948, RCA Victor was marketing black music under the name Blues and Rhythm. The words were reversed by Wexler of Atlantic Records, the leading label in the R&B field in the early years.

Rhythm and Blues (Kürzel: R & B, R ’n’ B oder auch RnB) bezeichnet den in den 1940er-Jahren vorherrschenden Stil afroamerikanischer Popmusik: eine rhythmisch stark akzentuierte Form des Blues, aus der später Rock ’n’ Roll (die von Weißen gespielte und produzierte Form des R&B) wurde. Der Begriff Rhythm and Blues tauchte 1941, nach einem Tantiemenstreit zwischen der amerikanischen Urheberrechtsgesellschaft ASCAP und den Rundfunkanstalten der USA erstmals als Gattungsbegriff auf, um den als diskriminierend empfundenen Begriff race music zu ersetzen, so betitelte das Billboard-Magazin ab 1949 eine seiner Spartenhitparaden mit Rhythm and Blues. Geprägt haben soll ihn Jerry Wexler, der damalige Journalist und spätere Produzent des Atlantic-Labels. In der amerikanischen Musikindustrie wird der Begriff so bis heute auch als Sammelbezeichnung für Afroamerikanische Mainstreammusik überhaupt verwendet.

Rhythm and blues, w skrócie R&B, to styl powstały w USA bezpośrednio po zakończeniu II wojny światowej, wywodzący się z jazzu i bluesa. Tworzony głównie przez czarnoskórych muzyków, był jednym z najważniejszych źródeł, z których powstał "bielszy odcień R&B" czyli rock and roll.Pierwotny R&B lat 50. charakteryzował się:szerokim instrumentarium opartym na instrumentach perkusyjnych, dętych, gitarach i pianinie, - szczególnie charakterystyczne dla niego były brzmienia organów Hammonda i gitar akustycznych zaopatrzonych w proste generatory drgań, zamieniające je w prymitywne gitary elektryczne;wielogłosowymi, często chóralnymi śpiewami;ostrym, wiodącym wokalem - wywodzącym się wprost z tradycyjnego bluesa, jednak przystosowanym do szybszych rytmów.

Il Rhythm and Blues (o R&B) è un termine introdotto nel 1949 da Jerry Wexler, allora giornalista per la rivista Billboard. Il termine è una versione politicamente corretta della definizione allora usata (race music, considerato offensivo verso i neri). Più che una definizione di un genere musicale ben preciso, il rhythm and blues è stato utilizzato nel tempo per descrivere genericamente la musica contemporanea popolare degli afroamericani. Ai suoi inizi il R&B era una versione ritmata del Blues suonato, per la stragrande maggioranza, da afroamericani, successivamente, principalmente per ragioni di mercato, venne assimilato dai bianchi e ispirò così il Rock & Roll, è comunque difficile stabilire una precisa linea di differenza tra i due generi se non prima della contaminazione soul e della nascita del cosiddetto R&B moderno. Era fortemente influenzato dal jazz, il boogie, il blues, ed il gospel. Negli anni sessanta rhythm and blues passò di moda per essere rimpiazzato da altre espressioni (come soul music).
