The most experienced member of the Norway squad, having made his international debut in a goalless draw with Turkey in 1987, Rekdal captains the side. He broke his leg twice in 1999 and was unable to reclaim his place in the Hertha Berlin side, prompting a return to Norway with VĂ¥lerenga Fotball. He has a powerful shot and scored a crucial late equaliser away to England in 1993 with a strike from distance to help Norway on their way to qualifying for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He has a reputation for coolness under pressure - as shown when he scored the 89th-minute penalty that gave Norway a crucial and unexpected 2-1 win over Brazil at 1998 FIFA World Cup.
