Region

Region is a geographical term that is used in various ways among the different branches of geography. In general, region medium-scale area of land or water, smaller than the whole areas of interest (which could be, for example, the world, a nation, a river basin, mountain range, and so on), and larger than a specific site or location. A region can be seen as a collection of smaller units (as in "the New England states") or as one part of a larger whole (as in "the New England region of the United States").

France is divided into 26 regions or régions (in French), of which 21 are in continental metropolitan France, one is the island of Corsica, and four lie overseas. Régions in mainland France are further subdivided in between 1 and 8 départements.

La France est divisée en 26 régions, dont 22 régions situées en France métropolitaine (l'une d'entre elles, la Corse, étant plus spécifiquement une collectivité territoriale) et 4 régions d'outre-mer. Mayotte devrait devenir une région d'outre-mer en 2011.

Region – im Sinne eines geographischen Gebietes – ist ein zunächst unspezifischer Raumbegriff, der erst durch einen intentional hergestellten Kontext konkretisiert und damit begreifbar wird. Zur Orientierung wird er aber manchmal auch bewusst unspezifisch gebraucht, um eine ungefähre Angabe zu machen („In der Region um …“). Die Region ist das zentrale Untersuchungsobjekt der regionalen Geographie, beziehungsweise den regionalgeographischen Zweigen der Teilgebiete der allgemeinen Geographie.

Die Regionen (frz. Régions, Sg. Région) sind die oberste Ebene der Collectivités territoriales (Gebietskörperschaften) in Frankreich. Frankreich ist in insgesamt 26 Regionen unterteilt. 22 der Regionen befinden sich in Europa. Die in Europa gelegenen Regionen bestehen jeweils aus mehreren Départements. Die Region Korsika ist eine Collectivité territoriale mit Sonderstatus. Die vier Regionen in Übersee (Régions d'Outre-Mer: Martinique, Guadeloupe, Réunion und Guyane française) entsprechen den vier französischen Überseedépartements (Département-d'Outre-Mer = DOM).

Region - najwyższy szczebel podziału administracyjnego Francji.W latach 60. i 70. władze francuskie doszły do wniosku, że podział na departamenty jest niewystarczający. Planowanie strategiczne w tak małych jednostkach jest niemożliwe. Dlatego w roku 1972 powołano do życia nowe regiony administracyjne - regions de programme - które grupują od 2 do 8 departamentów. Ich granice i nazwy nawiązują często do starych nazw historycznych (np. Owernia, Pikardia, Lotaryngia). Tylko kilka posiada nazwy geograficzne (np. Rodan-Alpy, Centre) lub kombinacje nazw historycznych i geograficznych (np. Szampania-Ardeny).

Region - umownie wydzielony obszar, względnie jednorodny, odróżniający się od terenów sąsiednich cechami naturalnymi bądź nabytymi na przestrzeni dziejów. Do tych cech zaliczamy: położenie geograficzne, odrębność językową, religijną, etniczną zamieszkującej region społeczności.Regiony wydziela się (regionalizacja) w celu przestrzennego usystematyzowania materiału naukowego. Wyodrębnia się regiony naturalne (regiony fizycznogeograficzne), kulturowe (o wspólnych cechach kulturowych), gospodarcze (o wspólnych centrach bądź powiązaniach gospodarczych; regiony przemysłowe, rolnicze, itp.), czy administracyjne (wyodrębnione prawnie jednostki administracji terenowej - podział administracyjny).
