Redshift
red shift
Noun
1. (astronomy) a shift in the spectra of distant galaxies toward longer wavelengths; generally interpreted as the Doppler effect resulting from the velocity at which they recede as the universe expands
(hypernym) Doppler effect, Doppler shift
(classification) astronomy, uranology
Red shift
The lengthening of the wavelength of spectral lines, caused, either by the motion of the source away from the observer, or by the motion of the observer away from the source. Spectral lines are redshifted from distant
galaxies . This is interpreted to mean that the galaxies are moving away from us, due to the expansion of the universe.
