Red Wolf

The Red Wolf (Canis rufus) is a mammal of the order carnivora. It is one of the rarest canid species and is one of the most endangered animals in the world. It once roamed throughout the Southeastern United States. Aggressive predator control programs, hunting and agriculturalization have combined to bring the red wolf near to extinction, because it was thought to be a threat to livestock.

Wilk rudy, wilk czerwony (Canis rufus) - ssak drapieżny z Ameryki Północnej. Prawdopodobnie od niego wywodzi się wilk szary oraz kojot.Od około 20 lat uznany za gatunek wymarły na wolności. Kiedyś zamieszkiwał południowe Stany Zjednoczone (Pensylwania, Floryda i Teksas), ale ustawiczne polowania jak również niszczenie ich legowisk spowodowały prawie kompletny zanik tego gatunku.  Reintrodukowany przez United States Fish and Wildlife Service w Karolinie Północnej i w Great Smoky Mountains. Obecna populacja szacowana jest na ponad 200 osobników.

Il lupo rosso (Canis rufus) rappresenta la varietà di lupo più rara e minacciata. Si ritiene che in origine fosse diffuso in gran parte della porzione orientale del Nordamerica, dalla Pennsylvania al Texas. Nell'ultimo secolo, tuttavia, la caccia, la distruzione dell'habitat e l'ibridazione con il coyote hanno portato la specie sull'orlo dell'estinzione. Attualmente rimangono solo 270 esemplari, 170 dei quali in cattività e 100 reintrodotti nella Carolina del Nord.
