Il Compact Disc Digital Audio, in sigla CDDA, comunemente chiamato CD Audio, è uno standard di registrazione audio su compact disc dedicato all'home audio.IL CD Audio è stata la versione originale dei CD, da cui sono derivati tutti gli altri formati. La struttura fisica del disco ed i protocolli di memorizzazione dei dati è descritta nel Red Book (traduzione letterale: libro rosso), redatto da Sony e Philips nel 1980, anno in cui cominciò la vendita dei CD.

Compact disc
Un compact-disc (letteralmente in italiano disco compatto) (nell'acronimo di lingua inglese CD) è un supporto di memorizzazione digitale composto da un disco di resina termoplastica trasparente, generalmente di 12 centimetri di diametro, che racchiude al suo interno un sottile foglio di materiale metallico sul quale sono memorizzate le informazioni come successioni "buchi" e "terre" (in inglese "pits" e "lands") successivamente letti per mezzo di un laser - per questo motivo sono detti anche dischi ottici.

Red Book
O Red Book é o padrão dos CDs de áudio — Compact Disc Digital Audio (Disco Compacto de Áudio Digital) ou CDDA. O Red Book (em tradução literal: Livro Vermelho) foi assim denominado conjuntamente com os outros livros (cada um de uma cor) que especificam os padrões para todos os formatos de CD-ROM.A primeira edição do Red Book foi lançada em Junho de 1980 pelas empresas Philips e Sony, sendo adotada pelo Digital Audio Disc Comittee e ratificada como IEC 908. O padrão não é disponível gratuitamente e precisa ser licenciado através da Philips. À época de sua primeira publicação, o custo através de requisição junto à Philips era de 5 mil dólares. Em 2006, a IEC 908 foi renomeada para IEC 60908 e passou a ser disponibilizada para download no formato PDF por 210 dólares [1].
