Rüstü has been Turkey’s first-choice goalkeeper since 1996 having made his debut against Iceland in 1994. Conceded just seven goals in his ten matches of Euro 2000 qualifying. He took over from Engin Ipekoglu at club and international level after initially impressing for the Under-21 side. Rüstü was particularly outstanding in Turkey’s historic 1-0 win against Germany when he made phenomenal saves from Ulf Kirsten and Oliver Bierhoff in order to preserve his side’s slender advantage. He also kept a clean sheet in the return encounter with the Germans in Munich. His main strengths are his willingness to come for high balls and his ability in one-on-one situations. Was one of the best GK of Euro 2000.
