Randy California

Randy California (born Randy Craig Wolfe; February 20, 1951 –  January 2, 1997) was a guitarist, singer and songwriter and one of the original members of the rock group Spirit, formed in 1967. Randy was born into a musical family in Los Angeles, and spent his early years studying varied styles at the family's Hollywood nightclub, the Ash Grove. He was fifteen years old when they moved to New York and he met Jimi Hendrix in 1966. He played in Hendrix's band Jimmy James & the Blue Flames that summer. The stage name "Randy California" was given to him by Hendrix to distinguish him from another Randy in the band (who Hendrix dubbed "Randy Texas"). When Hendrix was invited to come to England by Chas Chandler, Randy was not allowed to go (by his parents) and so missed out on what became the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Januar 1997 in Molokai, Hawaii), eigentlich Randy Wolfe, war ein US-amerikanischer Rockgitarrist.Mit 15 Jahren spielte California einen Sommer lang in New York mit Jimi Hendrix in dessen Band Jimi James & The Blue Flames. Hendrix war es auch, der ihn California nannte, um ihn von dem anderen Randy in der Band zu unterscheiden.Mit seinem Stiefvater Ed Cassidy gründete California anschließend in Los Angeles die Band Spirit, mit der er bis 1970 vier Alben produzierte. California schrieb die meisten Songs und war auch Sänger der Band. Er schrieb den Spirit-Hit "I Got A Line On You" (1969). Einer der größten Erfolge feierte Spirit bei der 2. Rocknacht des Rockpalast.

Biografia Inizia a suonare la chitarra giovanissimo dimostrando subito un notevole talento. All'età di 15 anni, entrando in un negozio di dischi di New York, conosce Jimi Hendrix. Tra i due chitarristi nasce una buona amicizia tanto che Hendrix lo invita a suonare nella sua band Jimmy James & the Blue Flames che a quel tempo si esibiva al Cafe Wha?. Questa collaborazione influenzerà notevolmente lo stile di Randy Wolfe. Il nomignolo "California" pare sia stato attribuito da Hendrix stesso per non confonderlo con un altro Randy presente nel suo gruppo. La collaborazione si interrompe quando Hendrix parte per l'Inghilterra dove formerà gli Experience. Randy essendo troppo giovane non potrà seguirlo.
