Ramie

Ramie (Boehmeria nivea) is a flowering plant in the nettle family Urticaceae, native to eastern Asia. It is a herbaceous perennial growing to 1 - 2.5 m tall; the leaves are heart-shaped, 7-15 cm long and 6-12 cm broad, and white on the underside with dense small hairs - this gives it a silvery appearance; unlike nettles, the hairs do not sting. The true ramie or China Grass also called Chinese plant or white ramie is the Chinese cultivated plant. A second type, is known as green ramie or rhea and is believed to have originated in the Malay Peninsula. This type has smaller leaves which are green on the underside and it appears to be better suited to tropical conditions.

Ramie ist eine Bast-Faser aus den Stängeln der Ramie-Pflanzen (Boehmeria nivea und Boehmeria tana). Der Anbau findet hauptsächlich im Fernen Osten, in der ehemaligen UdSSR und in den USA statt. Die Fasern sind gut anfärbbar und haben eine hohe Saugfähigkeit. Sie werden vor allem für Tischwäsche, Seile und Bänder und als kurze Stapelfaser für Banknoten verwendet. Ramie ist eine der stärksten Naturfasern und wird in nassem Zustand noch reißfester. Die Elastizität und Dehnungsfähigkeit ist gering. Ramie wird meist in Mischungen mit Wolle, Baumwolle oder Seide verarbeitet.

Il ramiè (Boehmeria nivea) è una urticacea di provenienza asiatica. Dalla sua corteccia si ricava una fibra tessile. Nell'Estremo Oriente viene anche utilizzata come pianta ornamentale.Raggiunge un'altezza compresa tra 1 e 2,5 metri, le foglie hanno forma di cuore, lunghe dai 7 ai 15 cm e larghe 6 - 12 cm, bianche e pelose nella parte inferiore.Il ramiè bianco è coltivato in Cina, mentre una seconda varietà, il ramiè verde, si pensa abbia avuto origine nella penisola malese. Quest'ultima ha foglie più piccole, verdi nella parte inferiore, e cresce in ambiente tropicale.
