A variable star which is found in
galactic nuclei and in globular clusters. They are giant stars of stellar population II, and have spectral classifications between A and F. They typically have periods of only a few hours. Their upper period limits are just over a day. The brightness of these stars can vary be between 0.2 and 2 magnitudes. A RR Lyrae star is similar to a Cepheid variable star.
