RNA polymerase

RNA polymerase (RNAP or RNApol) is an enzyme that makes an RNA copy of a DNA or RNA template. In cells, RNAP is needed for constructing RNA chains from DNA genes, a process called transcription. RNA polymerase enzymes are essential to life and are found in all organisms and many viruses. In chemical terms, RNAP is a nucleotidyl transferase that polymerizes ribonucleotides at the 3' end of an RNA transcript.

Enzyme that catalyzes (speeds) the polymerization of RNA. RNA polymerase uses preexisting nucleic acid templates and assembles the RNA from ribonucleotides.

An enzyme that transcribes an RNA molecule from the template strand of a DNA molecule. It adds to the 3' end of the growing RNA molecule one nucleotide at a time using ribonucleotide triphosphates (rNTPs) as substrates (this reaction releases pyrophosphates). RNA polymerase I is dedicated to the synthesis of only one type of RNA molecule (pre-rRNA). RNA polymerase II is required for general transcription reactions. RNA polymerase III produces small RNAs such as tRNAs and 5S rRNA.
