Ribonucleic acid , or RNA, is part of a group of molecules known as the nucleic acids, which are one of the four major macromolecules (along with lipids, carbohydrates and proteins) essential for all known forms of life. Like DNA, RNA is made up of a long chain of components called nucleotides. Each nucleotide consists of a nucleobase, a ribose sugar, and a phosphate group. The sequence of nucleotides allows RNA to encode genetic information. All cellular organisms use messenger RNA (mRNA) to carry the genetic information that directs the synthesis of proteins. In addition, many viruses use RNA instead of DNA as their genetic material.

Die Ribonukleinsäure ist eine Nukleinsäure, das heißt eine Kette aus vielen Nukleotiden (ein so genanntes Polynukleotid). Im internationalen und im wissenschaftlichen Sprachgebrauch wird die Ribonukleinsäure mit der englischen Abkürzung RNA (ribonucleic acid) bezeichnet, im deutschen Sprachraum auch mit RNS.

L'acide ribonucléique (ARN) est un polymère similaire à l'ADN, aussi bien en termes structurels qu'en termes fonctionnels (matérialisation et traitement de l'information génétique). Il y a quatre différences par rapport à l'ADN :

• l'ARN a pour composant un sucre ribose là où l'ADN a un désoxyribose.
• la base uracile a un rôle pour l'ARN qui est rempli par la thymine dans l'ADN ;
• l'ARN est généralement simple brin (monocaténaire), sauf chez quelques organismes tels les rétrovirus, tandis que l'ADN est double brin (bicaténaire) avec une structure en double hélice ;
• l'ARN est court (50 à 5 000 nucléotides et non pas des millions comme dans l'ADN).

Ribonukleinsyra, som förkortas RNA (av engelskans ribonucleic acid), är en makromolekyl som finns i alla levande organismer. Hos levande celler finns det genetiska materialet i form av den besläktade, mer stabila molekylen dna, medan RNA återfinns i mer kortlivade molekyler. En del virus har sitt genom uppbyggt av ribonukleinsyra, exempelvis hiv.

Kwasy rybonukleinowe, RNA, polimery kondensacyjne rybonukleotydów, występujące zarówno w jądrze komórkowym, jak i w cytoplazmie. Nukleotydy połączone są typowym dla kwasów nukleinowych wiązaniem fosfodiestrowym. W komórce występuje wiele klas kwasów rybonukleinowych różniących się pełnioną funkcją, a także masą cząsteczkową i strukturą, m.in.:

• heterogenne jądrowe (hnRNA lub Pre-mRNA)- głównie produkty transkrypcji DNA i przetwarzania surowego transkryptu do mRNA
• antysensowne RNA albo interferencyjne RNA (siRNA i miRNA) - produkowane w celu precyzyjnej regulacji ekspresji genów kodujących białka (za pomocą mechanizmu wspólnego lub bardzo zbliżonego do systemu zwalczania wirusów RNA)
• małe jądrowe (snRNA) pełniące funkcje enzymatyczne przy wycinaniu intronów z transkryptów
• informacyjne zwane matrycowymi (mRNA)
• rybosomowe (rRNA)
• małe cytoplazmatyczne (w tym tRNA)
