RIFF

In music, a riff is an ostinato figure: a repeated chord progression, pattern, refrain or melodic figure, often played by the rhythm section instruments, that forms the basis or accompaniment of a musical composition (though they are most often found in rock music, Latin, funk and jazz). Classical music is also sometimes based on a simple riff, such as Ravel's Boléro. Riffs can be as simple as a saxophone honking over an entire chorus on a simple, catchy rhythmic figure, or as complex as the riff-based variations in the head arrangements played by the Count Basie Orchestra.

The Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF) is a generic meta-format for storing data in tagged chunks. It was introduced in 1991 by Microsoft and IBM, and was presented by Microsoft as the default format for Windows 3.1 multimedia files. It is based on Electronic Arts's Interchange File Format, introduced in 1985, the only difference being that multi-byte integers are in little-endian format, native to the 80x86 processor series used in IBM PCs, rather than the big-endian format native to the 68k processor series used in Amiga and Apple Macintosh computers, where IFF files were heavily used.

RIFF (Resource Interchange File Format) ist ein Containerformat zur Speicherung von Multimedia-Daten, das 1991 von Microsoft und IBM entwickelt und mit den Multimediaerweiterungen für Windows 3.1 eingeführt wurde. Als Grundlage für das RIFF-Dateiformat diente das Interchange File Format (IFF). RIFF-Dateien können beliebige Multimedia-Ressourcen in einer Datei abspeichern (z.B. Windows Bitmap, Audio- und Videodaten oder RTF-Texte).

Ein Riff (der) ist ein Begriff aus der Rock-, Pop- und Jazzmusik und bezeichnet eine kurze, prägnante, sich wiederholende Ton- oder Akkordfolge in der Begleitmusik zum Hauptthema eines Musikstücks. Im Jazz ist hierfür auch der Ausdruck Vamp gebräuchlich. Sein Gegenstück im Rhythmus heißt Groove. Beides wird unter dem Oberbegriff Ostinato zusammengefasst, der allerdings hauptsächlich in der klassischen Musik Anwendung findet. Im Gegensatz zum Groove zieht sich ein Riff nicht durch das gesamte Stück, sondern ist auf kleinere Abschnitte beschränkt, prägt aber entscheidend seinen Charakter, sodass es viele Popmusiker mit musikalischem Einfall gleichsetzen.

Riff w muzyce jazzowej to refren zawierający krótkie rytmiczne zwroty, zwykle grany przez sekcję rytmiczną oraz dętą i zwieńczający solo instrumentalne. Zazwyczaj daje wrażenie zawieszania i symuluje zbliżanie się do zakończenia utworu, po którym jednakże następuje kolejne solo lub gra zespołowa.Riff w muzyce rockowej (i gatunkach muzycznych wywodzących się z rocka jak np. w metalu) to krótka melodia, motyw lub pojedyncza fraza, zwykle część dłuższego solo, często otwierająca utwór i potem powracająca wielokrotnie w czasie jego trwania. Riffy są najłatwiej "wpadającymi w ucho" częściami utworów rockowych.

Per cellule ripetitive più prolungate (o a carattere rilassato) si usa a volte il termine groove.
