Le groupe des langues rhéto-romanes appartient à celui des langues romanes. On y recense trois langues, parlées en Suisse et dans le nord de l'Italie, à l'intérieur de l'arc alpin ou dans sa proximité, c'est-à-dire dans l'aire de l'ancienne province romaine de Rhétie. La grande variété interne de cette famille linguistique et des raisons historiques et génétiques (le frioulan n'a pas connu le substrat rhétique) font que l'on préfère parfois la dénomination rhéto-frioulan, plus rigoureuse, à la dénomination traditionnelle rhéto-roman.

Die Rätoromanischen Sprachen (im weiteren Sinne), zum Teil auch Alpenromanische Sprachen genannt, bilden – nach einigen Forschern, aber durchaus umstritten – eine Gruppe von romanischen Sprachen und Dialekten, die noch in wenigen Alpentälern in der Schweiz (bekannt als Bündnerromanisch, umgangssprachlich Romanisch bzw. Rumantsch) und in Italien (ladinische Sprache, Furlanisch) gesprochen werden. Sie entwickelten sich aus dem Vulgärlatein der ehemaligen römischen Provinz Raetien und behielten durch die Abgeschiedenheit der Gebirgstäler viele archaische Besonderheiten.

Języki retoromańskie - grupa języków romańskich, używanych przez około 700 tys. osób, przede wszystkim Retoromanów zamieszkujących Alpy w Szwajcarii i Włoszech oraz okolice włoskiego miasta Udine. Dawniej dialekty retoromańskie często traktowano jako lokalne odmiany jednego języka retoromańskiego. Działania podejmowane w celu standaryzacji języka i wprowadzane prawodawstwo chroniące mniejszości językowe świadczą jednak o tym, że w ramach dialektów retoromańskich wyłaniają się trzy odrębne języki standardowe:romansz (Szwajcaria, głównie kanton Gryzonia), ladyński  (Włochy, centralne Dolomity - Południowy Tyrol, prowincja Belluno),furlański czyli friulski (Włochy, region autonomiczny Friuli-Wenecja Julijska).

Il gruppo linguistico retoromanzo, è un raggruppamento di lingue neolatine unite da strette affinità e parlate da circa 700.000-900.000 persone nella parte centro-orientale dell'arco alpino. Le lingue riconosciute che ve ne fanno parte sono il romancio, il ladino ed il friulano; nel complesso queste tre lingue esauriscono l'intero gruppo.
