The retinoblastoma protein (abbreviated pRb, RB or RB1) is a tumor suppressor protein that is dysfunctional in several major cancers. One function of pRb is to prevent excessive cell growth by inhibiting cell cycle progression until a cell is ready to divide. It is also a recruiter of several chromatin remodeling enzymes such as methylases and acetylases.

RB1 est le gène du rétinoblastome, situé sur le bras long du chromosome 13 (13q14). Il code une protéine suppresseur de tumeur qui contrôle le cycle cellulaire. Lorsque le gène est inactivé par mutation des deux allèles, la croissance cellulaire n'est plus contrôlée, ce qui mène à une prolifération cellulaire.

La protéine du rétinoblastome (pRB) est une protéine de séquestration qui exerce un contrôle négatif du cycle cellulaire. Cette fonction est essentielle dans les organismes pluricellulaires pour éviter la formation de tumeurs malignes qui mettraient en péril l’organisme, ce qui permet de qualifier cette protéine de « suppresseur de tumeur ».

RB (pRb, Rb) – białko kodowane przez  gen supresorowy RB1. Gen RB1 jest zmutowany w wielu typach nowotworów człowieka . Nazwa białka RB pochodzi od siatkówczaka (retinoblastoma), nowotworu spowodowanego mutacjami w obydwu allelach kodującego białko genu RB1. Białko RB w komórkach jest obecne zazwyczaj jako fosfoproteina, i jest substratem reakcji fosforylacji przeprowadzanej przez liczne białka enzymatyczne z rodziny kinaz. Udowodnioną funkcją białka RB jest zapobieganie podziałowi komórki przez zatrzymanie cyklu komórkowego. Niefunkcjonalne białko RB nie zapobiega podziałom komórek, stąd udowodniony związek między mutacjami z utratą funkcji w genie RB1 a niekontrolowanymi podziałami komórek nowotworu.

Rb es la proteína del retinoblastoma, una proteína supresora de tumores. Su alteración génica recesiva causa cáncer en el tejido donde se produce. Originalmente se detectó esta alteración en cáncer de retina de donde deriva su nombre. Este daño se produce por inactivación de la proteína cuando una mutación afecta a ambos alelos de genoma: de esta forma, y puesto que la función normal de la Rb es presentar un freno a la división celular, su inactividad puede suponer la aparición de un cáncer.
