RAF Akrotiri
RAF Akrotiri is a large Royal Air Force station on the island of Cyprus. It is located in the south of the island, in the UK sovereign base area of Akrotiri. It is one of the few full-scale RAF stations left outside the United Kingdom.Although located on the island of Cyprus, it is not part of the territory of the government in Nicosia. When the UK granted Cypriot independence in 1960, it retained a small amount of territory to create the UK sovereign bases. Akrotiri stands within the limits of that territory. The station commander is double-hatted and is also the officer commanding the Akrotiri or Western Sovereign Base Area, reporting to the commander of British Forces Cyprus who is also the Administrator.
