King's Counsel

Queen's Counsel
Queen's Counsel (
postnominal QC), during the
reign of a male
sovereign known as King's Counsel (KC), are lawyers appointed by
letters patent to be one of "Her Majesty's Counsel learned in the law"; the position exists in various
Commonwealth countries around the world. They do not constitute a separate order or degree of
lawyers. They are, however, more than merely a
professional rank, as their
status is conferred by
the Crown and recognised by the
courts. In order to "take silk" (i.e. become one of Her Majesty's Counsel) one generally has to serve as a
barrister or a Scottish advocate for at least 10 years. Recently
solicitors have also been appointed Queen's Counsel.
