The quadratus plantæ (flexor accessorius) is separated from the muscles of the first layer by the lateral plantar vessels and nerve. It acts to aid in flexing the 2nd to 5th toes (offsetting the oblique pull of the flexor digitorum longus) and is one of the few muscles in the foot with no homolog in the hand.

Der Musculus quadratus plantae (deutschsprachige Bezeichnung Sohlenviereckmuskel) liegt im Bereich der Unterseite des Fußskelettes zwischen Fußskelett und kurzem Zehenbeuger. Er entspringt an der Plantarfläche des Fersenbeines (Calcaneus). Der Musculus quadratus plantae setzt an der Sehne des langen Zehenbeugers (Musculus flexor digitorum longus) an, kurz bevor diese sich in die Teilsehnen auffächert. Über diese Sehne setzt er an den Basen der Endglieder der zweiten bis fünften Zehe an.
