QUATERNARY PERIOD

The Quaternary Period is the geologic time period from the end of the Pliocene Epoch roughly 1.806 million years ago to the present. The Quaternary includes 2 geologic subdivisions — the Pleistocene, including Gelasian that used to belong to Pliocene, and the Holocene Epochs. There is an ongoing debate of the status of Quaternary – a recent proposal from ICS was to make Quaternary a subperiod under Neogene, but that was retracted at criticism from INQUA, so instead ICS and INQUA agreed to erect Quaternary a subera, above Neogene, and to place the base for Quaternary at 2.588 ± 0.005, the base for Gelasian. However IUGS decided that Quarternary couldn't start within the epoch Pliocene thereby splitting it in two, so the decision is still awaiting settlement.

Das Quartär ist der jüngste Zeitabschnitt der Erdgeschichte einschließlich der "Jetztzeit". In der Historischen Geologie repräsentiert das Quartär ein chronostratigraphisches System bzw. eine geochronologische Subperiode. Die Entscheidung über die Verschiebung der Grenze von 1,8 Ma auf 2,6 Ma fiel in einer Mehrheitsentscheidung der Internationalen Stratigrafischen Kommission (ICS) im Jahre 2005. Somit umfasst das Quartär den gesamten Zeitraum des letzten Eiszeitalters.

Czwartorzęd (Q) - okres w erze kenozoicznej, który zaczął się 1,87 mln lat temu, a więc z końcem trzeciorzędu, i trwa do dziś. Dzielimy go na plejstocen (od 1,87 mln lat temu do 11,5 tys. lat temu) i holocen. W czwartorzędzie następuje dalsze ochłodzenie klimatu, w rezultacie dochodzi do rozwoju wielkich pokryw lodowych. Ostatni lądolód ustąpił z terenów środkowej Europy zaledwie około 12 tysięcy lat temu (koniec plejstocenu). Holocen jest zatem wiekiem (piętrem), które nastąpiło po ustąpieniu lodowców.

Quaternario (o Neozoico) sono due termini recentemente abbandonati per definire l'era geologica più recente, quella in cui viviamo, l'ultima dell'eone Fanerozoico. Questa era è stata in principio definita come l'ultimo periodo di estrema variabilità climatica nella storia della Terra, marcata da numerose glaciazioni e iniziata circa 1,8 milioni di anni fa.
