Punjab region

Punjab ਪੰਜਾਬ in Gurmukhi, , , (, meaning "The Land of the five Rivers") (c.f. ap-); also Panjab (, ) is a region straddling the border between India and Pakistan. The "Five Rivers" are the Beas, Ravi, Sutlej, Chenab and Jhelum, all tributaries of the Indus. Punjab has a long history and rich cultural heritage. The people of the Punjab are called Punjabis and speak a language named Punjabi. The main religions in Indian Punjab are Sikhism and Hinduism, while Islam is the majority in Pakistani Punjab.

Le Penjab - ou Panjâb, Pendjab ou Punjab - désigne des subdivisions de l'Inde et du Pakistan, chacun des deux pays ayant récupéré une portion du pays sikh lors de l'indépendance et de la partition qui l'a accompagnée, car les sikhs menés par Baba Kharak Singh - suivant Gandhi et contrairement aux musulmans menés par Muhammad Ali Jinnah qui obtinrent la création d'une république islamique - n'ont pas souhaité à cette époque la création d'un état sikh.

Pendżab (Pandźab, Pięciorzecze) – kraina historyczna w południowej Azji, rozciągająca się wzdłuż granicy indyjsko-pakistańskiej. Dawniej tworzył jedną całość, obecnie podzielony jest między dwa państwa. Położony w północnej części Indii stan Pendżab zajmuje powierzchnię 50,4 tys. km², zamieszkuje go 24,3 mln mieszkańców (2000). Stolicą indyjskiego Pendżabu jest  Czandigarh. Pakistańską prowincję Pendżab o powierzchni 205,3 tys. km² zamieszkuje 72,6 mln (1998). Stolicą pakistańskiego Pendżabu jest  Lahaur.

El Panyab (conocido en inglés como Punjab) es una región geográfica compartida por los estados de Panyab, Haryana e Himachal Pradesh (en India) y la provincia de Panyab (en Pakistán).El nombre Panyab proviene del persa پنج (panj: ‘cinco’) y اب (āb: ‘agua’) significa ‘región de los cinco ríos’. Éstos, tributarios del río Indo, son el Beas, el Chenab, el Jhelum, el Ravi y el Sutlej. Los cinco ríos ahora divididos entre India y Pakistán, se unen para formar el Panya Nada (‘cinco ríos’), que se une al Indo.
