It has the symbol Pu and the atomic number 94. It is the element used in most modern nuclear weapons. The most significant isotope of plutonium is 239Pu, with a half-life of 24,100 years. It can be made from natural uranium and is fissile. The most stable isotope is 244Pu, with a half-life of about 80 million years, long enough to be found in extremely small quantities in nature. In fact, 244Pu is the nucleon-richest atom that naturally occurs in the Earth's crust, albeit in small traces.

Le plutonium est un métal lourd très dense — approximativement 1,74 fois plus lourd que le plomb — radioactif et toxique, de  numéro atomique 94, découvert aux États-Unis par Glenn T. Seaborg, Edwin M. McMillan, J. W. Kennedy et A. C. Wahl en 1940. De même que l'uranium 235, c'est une matière fissible, qui est utilisée pour son isotope 239 dans la fabrication d'armes nucléaires et la production d'énergie dans certaines centrales nucléaires. Il sert également à l'élaboration de générateurs thermoélectriques à radioisotope.

Plutonium ist ein chemisches Element mit dem Symbol Pu und der Ordnungszahl 94. Im Periodensystem der Elemente gehört es zur Gruppe der Actinoide. Plutonium ist ein giftiges und radioaktives Schwermetall. Plutonium wurde nach dem Zwergplaneten Pluto benannt, der zum Zeitpunkt der Entdeckung des Plutoniums noch als vollwertiger neunter Planet galt. Erst nach der künstlichen Erzeugung wurde entdeckt, dass es in Spuren auch natürlich vorkommt.

Pluton (Pu, łac. plutonium) - pierwiastek chemiczny z grupy aktynowców w układzie okresowym. Nazwa pochodzi od planety karłowatej Pluton.Pluton to transuranowiec, radioaktywny metal, po raz pierwszy wytworzony i zbadany przez zespół kierowany przez amerykańskiego chemika Glenna T. Seaborga w 1941 roku. Uczeni wykorzystali uran, który bombardowali jądrami deuteru (izotop wodoru). Ze względu na tajność Projektu Manhattan pracę na temat pierwiastka opublikowano dopiero w 1946 roku.
