Ptolemy

Claudius Ptolemaeus (Greek: ; after 83 –  161 AD), known in English as Ptolemy, was a Greek or Egyptian mathematician, geographer, astronomer, and astrologer who flourished in Alexandria, Roman Egypt.Ptolemy was the author of several scientific treatises, three of which would be of continuing importance to later Islamic and European science. The first is the astronomical treatise that is now known as the Almagest (in Greek, Η Μεγάλη Σύνταξις, "The Great Treatise", originally Μαθηματικἠ Σύνταξις, "Mathematical Treatise"). The second is the Geography, which is a thorough discussion of the geographic knowledge of the Greco-Roman world. The third is the astrological treatise known as the Tetrabiblos ("Four books") in which he attempted to adapt horoscopic astrology to the Aristotelian natural philosophy of his day.

Ptolemäus (griech. , Klaúdios Ptolemaíos, lat. Klaudiusz Ptolemeusz, Ptolemeusz Klaudiusz lub po prostu Ptolemeusz (łac. Claudius Ptolemaeus, gr.  Klaudios Ptolemaios) (ok. 100 - ok. 175) grecki uczony pochodzący z Tebaidy, który kształcił się i działał w Aleksandrii. Napisał wiele dzieł z dziedziny matematyki, astronomii, geografii i muzyki.Jego poglądy na budowę świata na wiele stuleci ugruntowały pogląd geocentryczny, który został obalony dopiero przez Mikołaja Kopernika. Ptolemeusz był też twórcą modelu ruchu ciał niebieskich, kombinującego dwa zasadnicze modele ruchu planet podane przez Hipparcha - ekscentryk oraz deferent z epicyklem. Innowacją Ptolemeusza było poszerzenie tego modelu o pojęcie ekwantu.

Claudio Tolomeo (in greco , in latino Claudius Ptolomaeus; ca. 100- ca. 175), noto semplicemente come Tolomeo, è stato un astronomo greco di epoca imperiale che visse e lavorò ad Alessandria d'Egitto. Considerato uno dei padri della geografia, fu autore di importanti opere scientifiche, la principale delle quali è il trattato astronomico noto come Almagesto. Della sua vita sappiamo solo il poco ricavabile dalle sue opere.
