Psychoactive drug

A psychoactive drug or psychotropic substance is a chemical substance that acts primarily upon the central nervous system where it alters brain function, resulting in temporary changes in perception, mood, consciousness and behavior. These drugs may be used recreationally to purposefully alter one's consciousness, as entheogens for ritual or spiritual purposes, or therapeutically as medication.

Un psychotrope est une substance chimique qui agit principalement sur l'état du système nerveux central en y modifiant certains processus biochimiques et physiologiques cérébraux, sans préjuger de sa capacité à induire des phénomènes de dépendance, ni de son éventuelle toxicité. En altérant de la sorte les fonctions du cerveau, un psychotrope induit des modifications de la perception, des sensations, de l'humeur, de la conscience (états modifiés de conscience) ou d'autres fonctions psychologiques et comportementales.

Eine psychotrope Substanz ist ein die Psyche des Menschen beeinflussender Stoff. Man spricht auch von einer psychoaktiven Substanz, Psychotropikum (von griechisch ψυχή = Seele und τρόπος = Richtung), in der Mehrzahl Psychotropika.Jeder von außen zugeführte Stoff, der Veränderungen der Psyche und des Bewusstseins eines Menschen zur Folge hat, wird als psychoaktiv bezeichnet. Eine solche Änderung kann sowohl subtil sein, z. B. eine leichte Anregung, Entspannung oder Stimmungsänderung, aber auch sehr tiefreichend mit verändertem  Bewusstseinszustand, oder wie bei einem Trip auf einem starken Halluzinogen, bei dem Denken und Wahrnehmung komplett verändert sind. Der Begriff psychoaktiv ist nicht mit psychedelisch zu verwechseln.

Substancja psychoaktywna (substancja psychotropowa) – substancja chemiczna oddziałująca na centralny układ nerwowy bezpośrednio wpływając na funkcje mózgu, czego efektem są czasowe zmiany postrzegania, nastroju, świadomości i zachowania.Substancje psychoaktywne mogą być używane rekreacyjnie w celu wywołania zmiany świadomości (np. kawa, alkohol, kokaina, czy środki pochodzenia konopnego), w kulcie niektórych religii (np. zawierający meskalinę kaktus Pejotl, czy grzyby psylocybinowe), w medycynie (np. opioidy, czy kannabinoidy do łagodzenia bólu, stymulanty do łagodzenia objawów narkolepsji i ADHD, leki przeciwdepresyjne i antypsychotyczne w neurologii i psychiatrii).
