In psychology the psyche is the totality of the human mind, conscious and unconscious. Psychology is the scientific or objective study of the psyche. The word has a long history of use in psychology and philosophy, dating back to ancient times, and has been one of the fundamental concepts for understanding human nature from a scientific point of view. The English word soul is sometimes used synonymously, especially in older texts.

Psyche (altgriechisch , psychḗ, für ursprünglich Atem, Atem-Hauch – von ich atme, hauche, blase, lebe) wurde im Altgriechischen in sehr umfassendem Sinn verstanden und sogar zur Umschreibung der ganzen Person verwendet, ähnlich wie im Deutschen Mein Seelchen, Du, meine Seele u.ä., bis hin zur Bezeichnung des Kostbarsten, des Wertvollsten überhaupt.

Zrozpaczona Psyche rozpoczęła wędrówki po świątyniach w poszukiwaniu ukochanego. Trafiła wreszcie do Afrodyty, która przyjęła ją do wykonywania najcięższych prac i posług. Swą pracowitością, łagodnością i urodą przełamała wreszcie niechęć bogini, obdarzona została przez Zeusa nieśmiertelnością, sprowadzona na Olimp i zaślubiona Erosowi. Najbardziej znana wersja legendy o Erosie i Psyche pochodzi z Metamorfoz Apulejusza.
