Pruning is a horticultural practice involving the selective removal of parts of a plant, such as branches, buds, or roots. Reasons to prune plants include deadwood removal, shaping (by controlling or directing growth), improving or maintaining health, reducing risk from falling branches, preparing nursery specimens for transplanting, and both harvesting and increasing the yield or quality of flowers and fruits. The practice entails targeted removal of diseased, damaged, dead, non-productive, structurally unsound, or otherwise unwanted tissue from crop and landscape plants. Specialized pruning practices may be applied to certain plants, such as roses, fruit trees, and grapevines. Different pruning techniques may be deployed on herbaceous plants than those used on perennial woody plants.  Hedges, by design, are usually (but not exclusively) maintained by hedge trimming, rather than by pruning. Arborists, orchardists, and gardeners use various garden tools and tree cutting tools designed for the purpose, such as hand pruners, loppers, or chainsaws. In nature, meteorological conditions such as wind, ice and snow, and Salt pruning can cause plants to self-prune. This natural shedding is called abscission.

Pruning ist der englische Ausdruck für die Beschneidung von abgestorbenen, überreifen, oder aus anderen Gründen unerwünschten Teilen von Bäumen und Sträuchern. In der Informatik wird er oft für Verfahren verwendet, die bewusst bestimmte Informationen ignorieren, um eine höhere Effizienz zu erreichen.

La taille est une opération pratiquée sur les végétaux ligneux ou non, destinée à orienter la croissance (taille de mise en forme), à maîtriser la fructification (taille de fructification), ou à limiter la couverture foliaire (taille en vert) pour favoriser la maturation des fruits, par exemple. Plus la taille est importante, plus l'arbre réagit par le développement vigoureux de rameaux à bois au détriment de la mise à fruit.

Met de term pruning of synaptische pruning wordt in de neurofysiologie het proces aangeduid waarbij eerder gevormde synaptische verbindingen weer worden ongedaan gemaakt. Pruning is daarom het tegengestelde van synaptogenese. Het 'wegsnoeien' van eerder aangelegde synaptische verbindingen gebeurt spontaan en is grotendeels het gevolg van het niet-activeren ervan. Pruning is echter een natuurlijk en noodzakelijk proces, omdat het de vorming van zinvolle netwerken in het zenuwstelsel mogelijk maakt, die beantwoorden aan de ontwikkeling van kennis en vaardigheid. In die zin zijn pruning en synaptogenese complementair. Men kan het zo beschouwen dat synaptogenese zorgt voor de aanleg van een maximaal aantal mogelijke verbindingen en dat synaptische pruning zorgt dat de mogelijkheden die niet gebruikt worden ook fysiologisch worden weggesnoeid.

Snoeien is het verwijderen van delen van planten. Het kan hierbij gaan om kruidachtige delen bij kruidachtige planten alsook houtige delen bij struiken en bomen. Bij planten die alleen op tweejarig hout bloeien moet opgepast worden met snoeien, want anders kunnen er geen bloemen ontwikkelen.

Podar es el proceso de recortar un árbol o arbusto. Hecho con cuidado y correctamente, la poda puede incrementar el rendimiento del fruto; así, es una práctica  agrícola común. En producción forestal se emplea para obtener fustes más rectos y con menos ramificaciones, por tanto de mayor calidad. En arbolado urbano su utilidad es, por un lado, prevenir el riesgo de caída de ramas, y por otro controlar el tamaño de árboles cuya ubicación no permite su desarrollo completo.
