Providence is the capital and the most populous city of the U.S. state of Rhode Island, and one of the first cities established in the United States. Located in Providence County, it is the estimated third-largest city in the New England region. Despite having an estimated population of 175,255 as of 2006, it anchors the 35th largest metropolitan population in the country, with an estimated MSA population of 1,622,520, exceeding that of Rhode Island by about 60 ue to its reaching into southern Massachusetts. Situated at the mouth of the Providence River, on Narragansett Bay, the city's small footprint is crisscrossed by seemingly erratic streets and a rapidly changing demographic using them.

Providence ist die Hauptstadt des US-Bundesstaates Rhode Island. Mit 178.126 Einwohnern (1. Juli 2004) ist sie die zweitgrößte Stadt der Neuenglandstaaten. In Providence befindet sich die angesehene Brown University und unmittelbar deren Campus benachbart die Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) mit dem Rhode Island School of Design Museum. Außerdem befindet sich in Providence ein Campus der University of Rhode Island.

Providence è la capitale e la più grande città del Rhode Island. Secondo il censimento del 2000, ha una popolazione di 173.618 residenti, ma nel 2004 la stima dell'U.S. Census Bureau ha ritoccato il numero degli abitanti della città a 178.126. È situata nella contea di Providence ed è la seconda città del New England in ordine di grandezza, dopo Boston. La città è stata chiamata Providence da Roger Williams in onore della "Provvidenza misericordiosa di Dio" (God's merciful Providence), quando trovò questo luogo dopo essere stato cacciato dai Puritani del Massachussets. Il nome ufficiale dello Stato include il nome della città, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. È stata una delle prime città industriali degli Stati Uniti ed era nota per la lavorazione dell'argento e dei gioielli. Oggi, Providence è il centro economico, culturale e politico del Rhode Island.
