Protoplasm is the living content of a cell that is surrounded by a plasma membrane. This term is not commonly used in modern cell biology. Protoplasm is composed of a mixture of small molecules such as ions, amino acids, monosaccharides and water, and macromolecules such as nucleic acids, proteins, lipids and polysaccharides. In eukaryotes the protoplasm surrounding the cell nucleus is known as the cytoplasm and that inside the nucleus as the nucleoplasm. In prokaryotes the material inside the plasma membrane is the bacterial cytoplasm, while in gram-negative bacteria the region outside the plasma membrane but inside the outer membrane is the periplasm.

Protoplasma (gr.  proton: Erstes, plasma: das Geformte) ist eine heute nicht mehr gebräuchliche und teilweise uneinheitlich verwendete Bezeichnung für die innere sol- oder gelartige flüssige Masse aller lebenden Zellen inklusive Zellkern. Eingeführt wurde der Begriff von Jan Evangelista Purkyne 1839 in einem Vortrag für die „primitive Substanz in den Bläschen (Zellen) des pflanzlichen und tierischen Embryonalkörpers.“ Analoge Begriffe waren das ebenfalls von Purkyne genutzte „Cambium“ sowie die Bezeichnung „Sarkode“, die Félix Dujardin 1835 für die Einzeller (Rhizopoden) einführte.

Protoplasma är den substans som en levande cell innehåller, inklusive organeller och cellkärna. 'Protoplasma' är en äldre beteckning. I eukaryota celler kallas den del av protoplasman som omger cellkärnan för cytoplasma, och de del som finns inne i kärnan för nukleoplasma.

Protoplazma in. zaródź - materia stanowiąca "żywą", najbardziej aktywną metabolicznie przestrzeń w komórce organizmu roślinnego, zwierzęcego lub jednokomórkowego. Stanowią ją jądro komórkowe oraz cytoplazma. Protoplazma wraz z wakuolą lub wakuolami składa się na protoplast u roślin, grzybów i bakterii, a na kompletną komórkę u zwierząt.

In citologia, il termine protoplasma è stato coniato da Purkyne nel 1839 e in seguito, nel 1844, usato da Mohl per indicare una sostanza vivente attiva all'interno delle cellule. Il protoplasma era stato già descritto nel 1774 dall'abate Bonaventura Corti. Si tratta quindi del complesso di sostanze che compongono la cellula vivente. Il protoplasma si distingue in una parte di pertinenza del nucleo cellulare, detta nucleoplasma, ed un'altra al di fuori del nucleo detta citoplasma.
