A protagonist (from the Greek  protagonistes, "one who plays the first part, chief actor") is the main character (the central or primary personal figure) of a literary, theatrical, cinematic, or musical narrative, which ends up in conflict because of the antagonist and with whom the audience is intended to most identify. In the theatre of Ancient Greece, three actors played all of the main dramatic roles in a tragedy; the leading role was played by the protagonist, while the other roles were played by deuteragonist and the tritagonist.

Der Protagonist (griechisch πρωταγωνιστής, protagonistés „Haupt-“ oder „Erst-Handelnder“, von πρώτος, prótos „der erste“ und άγω, ágo „ich handle, bewege, führe“) bezeichnet in der griechischen Tragödie den Darsteller der ersten Rolle (ggf. vor Deuteragonist und Tritagonist, d. h. zweiter und dritter Hauptrolle).

En huvudperson eller protagonist är den centrala personen i en bok eller film, kring vilken verkets handling utspelar sig. Ordet protagonist kommer från grekiskans proto (tidig) och agonistes (tävlare, kämpe) och betecknade ursprungligen den första rollfigur som kom in på scenen.

Protagonista w tym ujęciu nie musi być osobą graną przez jakiegokolwiek aktora w dramacie.
