About
Prominence
A cloud or plume of hot, luminous gas which is elevated into the lower
solar corona from the top of the
chromosphere . This usually occurs over regions of solar activity such as sunspot groups. Prominences are supported by magnetic fields. There are several kinds of prominences. In a surge prominence, gas moves up and down along the same path. In a loop prominence the gas is suspended in a loop. Arch prominences resemble hedgerows of glowing gas. Some prominences exist only briefly, others are quiescent and exist for months, almost unchangingly. They are best observed at the limb of the Sun. When they are in silhouette against the disc they are known as filaments.
