Privatdozent (abbreviated PD, P.D. or Priv.-Doz.) or Private lecturer is a title conferred in some European university systems, especially in German-speaking countries, for someone who pursues an academic career and holds all formal qualifications (doctorate and habilitation) to become a tenured university professor. With respect to the level of academic achievement, the title compares to associate professor (North America) or something between senior lecturer and reader (UK); however, the title is not connected to any salaried position.

Ein Privatdozent (PD oder Priv.-Doz.) ist ein in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland verwendeter Titel für einen habilitierten Wissenschaftler an einer Universität oder einer Pädagogischen Hochschule, der keine Professorenstelle innehat. Privatdozenten sind als Hochschullehrer selbstständig und alleinverantwortlich zur akademischen Lehre berechtigt. In einigen Ländern sind sie zu einer Mindestzahl von Veranstaltungen verpflichtet, andernfalls verlieren sie den Titel (sog. Titellehre).

Privat-docent (en allemand : Privatdozent) est un titre universitaire de tradition allemande en Europe. Il désigne des enseignants qui ont écrit une habilitation, mais qui n'ont pas (encore) reçu une chaire d'enseignement ou de recherche. Pour cette raison, le privatdozent ne reçoit aucune rémunération de la part du gouvernement. Cependant, c'est un passage obligé pour obtenir une chaire.
