A prison (from Old French prisoun) is a place in which people are physically confined and, usually, deprived of a range of personal freedoms. Imprisonment or incarceration is a legal penalty that may be imposed by the state for the commission of a crime. Other terms used are penitentiary, correctional facility, remand centre, detention centre, and jail or gaol. In some legal systems some of these terms have distinct meanings. In the United States the difference between jails or detention facilities and prisons is primarily a function of the length of incarceration. Jails and detention facilities, under city or county jurisdiction, typically hold offenders awaiting trial or serving short sentences. Correctional facilities and prisons are more often run by the state or federal governments and house offenders serving long-term sentences. Similarly Ontario, Canada, jails and detention centres are used to hold remanded prisoners awaiting trial, sentencing or other court proceedings. Jails are typically small facilities originally designed to serve the local community and have been gradually replaced with large regional detention centres. Jails and detention centres are run by the provincial government. Once an offender is sentenced, he or she would be transferred to either a provincial correctional centre (if the sentence is less than two years) or a federal penitentiary (if the sentence is two years or more).

Gefängnis ist die früher oft übliche amtliche Bezeichnung für ein Gebäude zur sicheren Unterbringung von Untersuchungsgefangenen oder wegen einer Straftat verurteilten Strafgefangenen. In der Umgangssprache ist Gefängnis der Begriff für jede Art von strafrechtlich verordnetem Freiheitsentzug, oft werden auch die abfälligen Begriffe Knast oder Bau verwendet. Offiziell heißen Gefängnisse heute in Deutschland Justizvollzugsanstalt (JVA), in der Schweiz Strafanstalt und in Österreich Justizanstalt. In der Sprache internationaler Organisationen – wie zum Beispiel des Committee for the Prevention of Torture – beginnt sich der Terminus Haftort durchzusetzen. Psychisch kranke oder suchtkranke Straftäter werden unter bestimmten Umständen im Maßregelvollzug untergebracht.

Une prison ou pénitencier est un lieu de détention ; par extension, le terme prison désigne également la peine d' qui peut être infligée aux individus qui ne respectent pas les normes de la société. Dans la plupart des pays, ces normes sont définies par les lois.

Ordet anstalt används för olika vård- och skolinrättningar. I Sverige är ordet i denna betydelse numera oftast liktydigt med fängelse, fångvårdsanstalt och kriminalvårdsanstalt, medan det i Finland allmänt används om vårdinrättningar. En anstalt kan också vara en myndighet.

Zakład karny, więzienie – miejsce, w którym osoby skazane prawomocnym wyrokiem sądu odbywają karę pozbawienia wolności. W Polsce do 1970 roku terminem więzienie określano nie miejsce, lecz samą karę pozbawienia wolności.
