Primary production
Primary production is the production of organic compounds from atmospheric or aquatic carbon dioxide, principally through the process of photosynthesis, with chemosynthesis being much less important. All life on earth is directly or indirectly reliant on primary production. The organisms responsible for primary production are known as primary producers or autotrophs, and form the base of the food chain. In terrestrial ecoregions, these are mainly plants, while in aquatic ecoregions algae are primarily responsible. Primary production is distinguished as either net or gross, the former accounting for losses to processes such as cellular respiration, the latter not.

Autotrophie
Unter Autotrophie (altgriechisch autotroph - wörtlich: „sich selbst ernährend“ von autos - „selbst“, trophe - „Ernährung“) wird in der Biologie die Fähigkeit von Lebewesen verstanden, ihre Baustoffe (und organischen Reservestoffe) ausschließlich aus anorganischen Stoffen aufzubauen. Dies trifft vor allem auf Photosynthese betreibende Primärproduzenten (insbesondere Pflanzen) zu.

Autotrofia
L'autotrofia è la condizione nutrizionale di un organismo in grado di sintetizzare il proprio nutrimento a partire da sostanze inorganiche e utilizzando energia non derivante da sostanze organiche.Sono autotrofe, ad esempio, tutte le piante  che, attraverso il processo di fotosintesi clorofilliana, riescono a sintetizzare composti organici a partire da sostanze inorganiche: anidride carbonica e acqua grazie all'energia elettromagnetica della radiazione solare.La parola, di origine greca, è formata dai termini αὐτός (stesso) e τροφή (nutrimento). La condizione opposta è quella di eterotrofia.

Autotroof
Autotrofe organismen zijn organismen die CO2 gebruiken als bron van koolstof voor hun cellen. Ze halen hun energie uit anorganische stoffen of uit zonlicht. De energie gebruiken zij om kooldioxide om te zetten in glucose. Door gebruik van de genoemde energiebronnen zal door de acticviteit van autotrofe organismen de hoeveelheid organische stof toenemen.

Autotrofismo
Autotrofismo ou autotrofia (grego trofein, alimentar-se), em biologia, é o nome dado à qualidade do ser vivo de produzir seu próprio alimento a partir da fixação de dióxido de carbono, por meio de fotossíntese ou quimiossíntese. É o oposto de heterotrofismo. Os seres vivos com essa característica são chamados de autótrofos ou autotróficos.
