Praying Mantis

A praying mantis, or praying mantid, is the common name for an insect of the order Mantodea. Often mistakenly spelled preying mantis (an eggcorn, since they are notoriously predatory), they are in fact named for the typical "prayer-like" stance. The word mantis derives from the Greek word mantis for prophet or fortune teller. The preferred pluralization is mantids, though there is some usage of mantes or mantises.

Praying Mantis sind eine Band, die zusammen mit Gruppen wie Iron Maiden Ende der 70er und Anfang der 80er Jahre zu den Pionieren des New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWoBHM) gehörte. Mit weiteren bekannten Bands dieser Zeit spielte die Band auf großen Festivals und stand mit dem 1981er Debütalbum „Time tells no Lies“ kurz vor dem großen Durchbruch. Aufgrund vertraglicher Probleme erschien das zweite Album jedoch erst zehn Jahre später – in einer Zeit in der modernere Klänge die Musikwelt dominierten.

Modliszki (Mantodea) – . Swoją nazwę zawdzięczają pozie, przypominającej osobę ze złożonymi do modlitwy rękoma. Są to stosunkowo duże owady, liczniej występujące w strefie tropikalnej i subtropikalnej. W południowej Polsce występuje modliszka zwyczajna (Mantis religiosa). Na świecie znanych jest ponad 2000 gatunków.
