Praetor was a title granted by the government of Ancient Rome to men acting in one of two official capacities: the commander of an army, usually in the field, or the named commander before mustering the army; and an elected magistratus (magistrate) assigned varied duties, which varied at different periods in Rome's history. The functions of the magistracy, the praetura (praetorship), are described by the adjective: the praetoria potestas (praetorian power), the praetorium imperium (praetorian authority), and the praetorium ius (praetorian law), the legal precedents established by the praetiores (praetors). Praetorium, as a substantive, denoted the location from which the praetor exercised his authority, either the headquarters of his castra, the courthouse (tribunal) of his judiciary, or the city hall of his provincial governorship.

Die Praetur (eingedeutscht auch Prätur) war eines der höheren Ämter der römischen Ämterlaufbahn, des cursus honorum (im Regelfall das dritte Amt nach der Quästur und der Ädilität). Die Amtsinhaber wurden praetores (Singular: praetor, eingedeutscht: Prätoren) genannt. Sie wurden vom Volk in den Comitia Centuriata auf ein Jahr gewählt.

Praetor , (lat. praetor, egentligen "den, som går i spetsen", praeitor) betydde hos forntidens romare ursprungligen förman eller anförare och brukades först som titel för de två högsta republikanska ämbetsmännen (konsulerna), ävensom för diktatorn (praetor maximus, "högste praetor"), och fältherrar, som ju länge var antingen konsuler, praetorer eller, i republikens senare tider, prokonsuler och propraetorer, men övergick sedan att beteckna en särskild ämbetsmannabefattning.

Pretor (łac. praetor – l.mn. praetores) – wyższy urzędnik w antycznym Rzymie mający tzw. władzę mniejszą (imperium minus). W czasie nieobecności konsulów, pretor (później dwóch) przejmował najwyższą władzę w mieście, mogąc nawet zwoływać posiedzenia senatu. Zasadniczym jednak zadaniem pretorów było sądownictwo. Ważnym uprawnieniem pretora było wydawanie edyktów (edykty pretorskie), w których ustalał on sposoby postępowania w sprawach niedostatecznie jasno uregulowanych przez ustawy (leges) czy prawo zwyczajowe. Owe edykty odegrały ważną rolę w rozwoju prawodawstwa i były uwzględniane w późniejszych kodyfikacjach prawa rzymskiego.
