It is directed by Ridley Scott and stars Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Djimon Hounsou and Richard Harris. Crowe portrays General Maximus Decimus Meridius, friend of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, who is betrayed by the Emperor's ambitious son, Commodus (Phoenix), who murders his own father and seizes the throne. Captured and enslaved along the outer fringes of the Roman empire, Maximus rises through the ranks of the gladiatorial arena to avenge the murder of his family and his Emperor.

Les gladiateurs (du latin: signifiant « combattant à l'épée », ou « épéiste ») étaient des combattants professionnels esclaves qui se battaient entre eux, à l'origine pour honorer la mémoire d'un mort, puis de plus en plus pour le divertissement du public. Les plus anciennes représentations de combats rituels en Italie ont été retrouvées dans des tombes lucaniennes à Paestum, datées entre 370 et 340 av. J.-C.

Gladiator - film kostiumowy produkcji USA z 2000, w reżyserii Ridleya Scotta, którego akcja dzieje się w czasach starożytnego Rzymu. Obok postaci historycznych, jak cezar Marek Aureliusz czy jego syn Kommodus, występują też postaci fikcyjne jak Juba, czy też generał Maximus (aczkolwiek filmowy generał ma kilka pierwowzorów historycznych).
