Power Architecture
Power Architecture is a broad term to describe similar instruction sets for
RISC microprocessors developed and manufactured by such companies as
IBM,
Freescale,
AMCC,
Tundra and
P.A. Semi. The governing body is
Power.org, comprising over 40 companies and organisations.The term "Power Architecture" shouldn't be confused with IBM's different generations of "
POWER architectures" where the former is a broad term including all products based on POWER,
PowerPC and
Cell architectures. Power Architecture is a family name describing software,
toolchain, community and end-user appliances and not a strict term describing specific products or technologies.

1991. Puvodne byly urceny pro použití v domácích
pocítacích, staly se ale také populární v
embedded zarízeních i mezi vysoce výkonými procesory. V 90. letech byly procesory PowerPC základním kamenem PReP a Common Hardware Reference Platform, nejvetší úspech ale architektura našla v osobních pocítacích firmy Apple v letech
1994-
2006 (poté firma Apple prešla na platformu
Intel). Na poli osobních pocítacu jsou PowerPC procesory využívány v nové otevrené pocítacové platforme
Pegasos.
