Potentiometer

A potentiometer is a variable resistor that can be used as a voltage divider.Originally a potentiometer was an instrument to measure the potential (or voltage) in a circuit by tapping off a fraction of a known voltage from a resistive slide wire and comparing it with the unknown voltage by means of a galvanometer. The present popular usage of the term potentiometer (or 'pot' for short) describes an electrical device which has a user-adjustable resistance. Usually, this is a three-terminal resistor with a sliding contact in the center (the wiper). If all three terminals are used, it can act as a variable voltage divider. If only two terminals are used (one side and the wiper), it acts as a variable resistor. Its shortcoming is that of corrosion or wearing of the sliding contact, especially if it is kept in one position.

Potencjometr to opornik z możliwością zmiany rezystancji przez użytkownika. Zmiany tej dokonuje się poprzez zmianę położenia styku (ślizgacza) na ścieżce oporowej. Ślizgacz sprzężony jest z pokrętłem lub suwakiem. Ścieżkę oporową wykonuje się z węgla, cermetu, plastiku lub zwojów drutu oporowego. Dwa wyprowadzenia są zakończeniami ścieżki oporowej, trzeci jest połączony ze ślizgaczem.

Il potenziometro è un dispositivo elettrico equivalente ad un partitore di tensione resistivo variabile (cioè a due resistori collegati in serie, aventi la somma dei due valori di resistenza costante, ma di cui può variare il valore relativo). In origine i potenziometri erano utilizzati per misurare con precisione la tensione elettrica per confronto con una sorgente di riferimento. Il nome significa infatti letteralmente misuratore di potenziale (elettrico). Successivamente il termine si è esteso ad indicare l'impiego del dispositivo in applicazioni del tutto diverse dalla pura misura.
