Pompeii is a ruined Roman city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the comune of Pompei.It, along with Herculaneum, was destroyed, and completely buried, during a catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning two days on 24 August 79.The volcano collapsed higher roof-lines and buried Pompeii under many meters of ash and pumice, and it was lost for nearly 1700 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1748. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Italy and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pompei ist der Name einer italienischen Stadt mit 25.765 Einwohnern (Stand: 31. Mai 2005) in der Provinz Neapel. Sie liegt südlich vom Vesuv am rechten Ufer des Flusses Sarno, etwa 3 km vor dessen Einmündung in den Golf von Neapel. Die Nachbargemeinden sind Torre Annunziata, Boscoreale, Castellammare di Stabia, Sant'Antonio Abate, Santa Maria la Carità und Scafati (SA).

Pompeje (łac. Pompeii, wł. Pompei) to jedno z trzech miast rzymskich w prowincji cesarskiej Italia (obecne Włochy), które 24 sierpnia 79 roku n.e. zniszczył wybuch wulkanu Wezuwiusz. Popiół wulkaniczny, który zasypał Pompeje, doskonale zakonserwował budowle i przedmioty, co pozwoliło poznać nam dość dokładnie wygląd rzymskiego miasta średniej wielkości i życie jego mieszkańców.
